Why Boxed Water Is Better

Recyclable Is Good — Renewable Is Better

At Boxed Water, we go beyond just being 100% recyclable. Our plant-based cartons are made with over 95% renewable materials based on mass balance calculations, ensuring we do not deplete the Earth’s resources. Remember, plastic and aluminum use 0% renewable materials.  Every component was carefully selected with consideration for the planet. Here’s what makes up our packaging:

Plant-Based Plastic:

While the plastic we use is just a portion of our supplier’s total production, the mass balance approach ensures that plant-based inputs are added to their system in amounts that match our entire order. Although we can’t measure the exact renewable content in each cap and carton, this process allows us to reduce petroleum use and support renewable alternatives.

What Does Mass Balance Mean?

Mass balance is a certified system that allows manufacturers to mix plant-based and conventional materials in their production, while still tracking and allocating the renewable inputs across their output. We purchase enough to account for 100% of our needs, meaning our purchase supports the use of plant-based materials in the supply chain.

Better Then. Better Now: Our LCA Proves It

We commissioned a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) in 2019 to measure our environmental impact. While things have evolved, we re-validated our standing with auditors in 2024 and confirmed: We are still better than premium plastic and aluminum.

  • Lower carbon footprint

  • 100% Recyclable

  • 95% Renewable (up from 92%)

  • Backed by audits

  • Less fossil fuel dependency

This isn’t just packaging—it’s a mission.
We started Boxed Water because the planet deserved a better option than plastic.
