Please introduce yourself and tell us about Hike Clerb—what inspired you to start the movement?
My name is Evelynn Escobar and I’m a storyteller, community organizer, worldbuilder and the Founder & Executive Director of Hike Clerb. I was inspired to start the movement because of the experiences I was having outdoors as a Black and Indigenous woman. Seeing how homogenous outdoor spaces were and knowing that they look this way due to the systemic and structural inequalities that are a result of colonization – I wanted to create a safe space for Black, Indigenous, and other racialized women and TGNC to reconnect, explore, and repair our relationship with the land.
How do you incorporate sustainability into your personal life and Hike Clerb’s activities?
At the core of the work I do with Hike Clerb it’s reconnecting people to earth consciousness which ultimately leads one to live a life that’s more harmonious with our planet. With that in mind, there’s a level of mindfulness that goes into my everyday life and the programming at Hike Clerb to live in accordance with that value. Personally, I’ve been working on upcycling food waste at home. So much of what we throw away can be used in so many different ways!!
How does hydration play a role in your wellness routine?
Hydration is essential! This year i’ve been committing to a daily tea ritual and making pitchers of infused water to help me stay on track. Being hydrated vs. not drinking enough water makes a huge difference on my mental clarity!
What’s one wellness trend or practice you think more people should embrace?
Going outside!! I always bring back the metaphor of a flower – we too need sunlight, hydration, fresh air and room to grow in order to be the best version of ourselves.
What’s your favorite way to stay grounded and connected to nature during a busy season?
It’s funny because touching grass has become somewhat of a joke, but it really is one of the best practices to reset. Even just 5 minutes of being barefoot or lying in the grass will have you feeling like you’ve wiped your slate clean.
What’s something you’re currently reading, watching, or listening to that inspires you?
I’ve been listening to Bad Bunny’s latest project, Debi Tirar Mas Fotos on repeat and I’m so inspired to see someone create something so pure and intentional in their divine flow.
